When I was a kid I used to watch an hour and a half of Popeye every Sunday morning. Saturday was the good cartoon morning. Sunday kind of sucked. The older Popeye episodes were the best. Black and white, complete with all the racism the 30's could produce. The WWII episodes were good too. Patriotic and violent. The later episodes kind of sucked. Too much of Olive Oil. Something about her kind of creeped me out.
A few years ago I used to hang out with a girl who looked a lot like Olive Oil. I actually liked her a lot, but she was super religious, which was something of a block. Normally religious girls like me a lot. I think they think I need saving. Of course, that only leads to massive frustration when I can't round second base, but I digress. The point of this story when I gain weight and let my face grow I look suspiciously like Brutus, and I more or less begged her to team up costumes for Halloween, but she didn't have the right sense of humor.
Too bad Brutus had such a horrible predilection towards date rape, because otherwise I always liked him better. Seems like he was always destined to lose to a guy who used artificial stimulants to enhance his physical performance.
I would also like to mention that during the Popeye and Friends Show (with Tom Hatten as host. Kind of a cool dude) they would always show one episode each of three of the greatest cartoon mini-series ever: Super Chicken, George of the Jungle (the original cartoon, not the ass-tastic Disney movie staring Branden Frasier or the equally make more recent cartoon), and Tom Slick. All awesome, with some great villain games. I remember nostalgically such villainous greats as Baron Von Otto Matic (with Clutcher), Hassen Ben Boobi (the Sneaky Sheik from Leaky Creek), the discredited dentist from Illinois, Dr. Chicago, and of course, Sonia Nar and the Aqua Nuts. Rumor has it they are all now available on DvD and I will have it soon.
