Abbott & Costello
Abbott and Costello created one of the most iconic comedy routines in entertainment history with their timeless "Who's on First" bit. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were the most popular comedy duo of the 1940s and 1950s. They actually started off in burlesque in 1935 and later moved to radio. This of course led them to film and ultimately their greatest film: Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
Lou Costello didn't start in comedy. He was an amateur boxer believe it or not. You wouldn't imagine a guy with such a comedic face able to kick your ass. He also had to change his voice as the two men sounded too similar. His famous high pitched voice was an affect. The two were also true patriots, touring around the country during WWII to raise money for the war effort.
