More than 20 years after its release in theaters, Gladiator is one of the best and classic movies of all time. This epic historical drama film revolves around the character of a Roman General named Maximus Decimus Meridius, who was betrayed when Commodus, the son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father and takes over the throne. Maximus then became a gladiator and rose through the ranks of the arena to avenge the murders of his family and his beloved emperor Marcus Aurelius.
Did you know that when Russell Crowe first read the script of the movie, he wasn’t impressed by it? Gladiator was one of the best movies of the 21st century but its lead actor, Russell Crowe found the original script to be so bad? The film’s producers didn’t want their potential star to read the screenplay while it was still in the process of writing it and instead they wanted Crowe to meet with Ridley so that the latter could be the pitchman. Later, Crowe ended up taking the role and signed on for the lead role of Maximus.
