More than 20 years after its release in theaters, Gladiator is one of the best and classic movies of all time. This epic historical drama film revolves around the character of a Roman General named Maximus Decimus Meridius, who was betrayed when Commodus, the son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father and takes over the throne. Maximus then became a gladiator and rose through the ranks of the arena to avenge the murders of his family and his beloved emperor Marcus Aurelius.
Did you know that the movie’s film director, Ridley Scott, was already busy working on some other projects when producer Walter Parkes reached out to him? Walter asked Ridley if he wanted to work on something and the former threw a reproduction of his beautiful 19th-century painting onto Ridley’s desk. The beautiful painting was none other than Jean-Leon Gerome’s Police Verso which depicts a crowd of spectators giving a gladiator the thumbs down signal.
