Corpse Bride is a 2005 stop-motion animated film directed by Mike Johnson and Tim Burton. It follows the story of Victor Van Dort, the son of rich fish merchants, and Victoria Everglot, the mistreated daughter of impoverished aristocrats, who prepare for their fixed marriage. Although Victor and Victoria fell in love instantly, the nervous Victor ruined the wedding rehearsal by forgetting his vows and set Lady Everglot’s dress on fire. Ashamed of himself, he fled to a nearby forest and practiced his vows, and placed his wedding ring on an upturned root. To his surprise, the root is revealed to be the finger of a dead woman named Emily, who rose from the grave claiming that she is now Victor’s wife and brought him to the Land of the Dead.
Did you know that the character designs were from Tim Burton’s rough sketches? Burton spoke to Spanish artist Carlos Grangel and handed him a copy of the script of Corpse Bride together with some illustrations of the main characters that he had drawn. Burton trusted Grangel to explore every character of the sketches and the latter came up with the final designs that did not depart from Burton’s original sketches.
