The Beverly Hillbillies T-Shirts
Believe it or not but the theme song for this show, the Ballad of Jed Clampett by the Foggy Mountain Boys was a huge hit on the country charts (number 1) and hit number 44 on the pop charts.
This show had some weird tragedies associate with it. For one Sharon Tate (yes the Manson family Sharon Tate) appeared on 15 episode. For another the Beverly Hillbillies were a part of the great "Rural Purge" of 1971 where CBS, bowing to pressure from advertizers who wanted a younger audience and flying in the face of amazing rating dumped every show that remotely smacked of country including this one, Green Acres, Mayberry RFD, Lassie, the Jim Nabors Hour, and Hogan's Heroes.
The show was absolutely hated by the critics yet loved by audiences. Most critics loathed it calling it the lowest form of humor yet it shot up to number one after a mere six weeks on the air. Interestingly enough if the money the family had back then would be worth $538 million today. Kind of makes shooting at the ground seem like a good idea.
