Could We See a Deadpool-Wolverine Movie On The Horizon?

Twentieth Century Fox has been ever expanding the world of X-Men with sequels, prequels and spin off films since 2000. With seven appearances in total, Australian actor Hugh Jackman has consistently delivered with his performance as the tough and indestructible Wolverine. His original role as Logan may have launched him into superstardom, but misty-eyed fans were saddened to hear that Jackman plans to hang up his claws. Hugh Jackman has made it publicly known that the upcoming Logan film will be his final time playing the gruff Wolverine.

“This will be my last one,” Jackman said in an interview from May 2015. “It is my last time. It felt like it was the right time to do it. Seventeen years, I never thought in a million years it would last this long.”

Last month, rumors started circulating that Ryan Reynolds finished wrapping a short Deadpool scene for the upcoming Wolverine spinoff movie, Logan. While the Internet was certainly in a frenzy over the news, director James Mangold and Ryan Reynolds himself denied the rumors. Whether Ryan Reynolds does make an appearance as the merc with a mouth or not, Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine for the last time. In the spinoff film, Logan, the story takes place in a futuristic setting in the X-Men universe, set during the year 2024. Hugh Jackman slashed his claws as Wolverine in another solo film back in 2009, with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it garnered generally poor reception by fans. Since then, Jackman has appeared again as Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. At 48 years old, some fans feel that Hugh Jackman’s retirement is for the best. His character, Wolverine, doesn’t age and the thought of using elaborate CGI to recreate his buff physique just seems cringe-worthy.

However, Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, has other plans in mind. “I want Deadpool and Wolverine in a movie together. What we’re gonna have to do is convince Hugh.” Reynolds told Entertainment Weekly. “Part of the reason I want to do a Deadpool-Wolverine movie is not just because I think the two would light the screen on fire, but I genuinely love the guy.” Reynolds is set to hit the screen again for Deadpool 2, slated to hit theaters on March 2, 2018. ‘John Wick’ director David Leitch will take the helm for the project.

So, how does Wolverine himself feel about the team up? Well, Jackman didn’t exactly reject the possibility completely. “I’m hesitating because I could totally see how that’s the perfect fit.” The Australian actor told Variety. “But the timing may be wrong.” Just like Deadpool, Reynolds is particularly tenacious about the matter. “I have no idea if I can change his mind,” he said. “It’s the audience: I would exclusively exploit that relationship to get Hugh back for another one.”

With Logan set for release in March 3, 2017, we’ll just have to wait and see what’s in store next for Wolverine and Deadpool fans on the horizon. Crazy about Deadpool, X-Men and all things Wolverine? Be sure to check out our t-shirts, tank tops and geeky gifts at Nerd Kung Fu.
