The first new Star Trek in twelve years. Discovery arrived in 2017 and brought the franchise back to television after more than a decade away, launching a streaming service on its own.
Sonequa Martin-Green plays Michael Burnham, and the show made a structural break with everything before it: the lead is not the captain. Discovery follows a science specialist rather than the person in the chair, and it began with her committing mutiny. The ship runs on a spore drive that traverses a fungal network across the galaxy, which is either the most imaginative idea in modern Trek or the silliest, depending entirely on who you ask.
