It was built to sell a subscription service. CBS put it behind CBS All Access rather than on the network, making it the anchor show for a streaming platform that later became Paramount+. The show is set roughly a decade before Kirk takes the Enterprise, and its lead, Michael Burnham, is Sarek's human foster daughter - which makes her Spock's adoptive sister.
