Description
This Emerald City design comes from The Wizard of Oz, the 1939 film that almost nobody saw as a hit and that television then turned into the most watched movie ever made. The Wizard of Oz was released by MGM in 1939, adapted from the 1900 L. Frank Baum novel. It was an expensive production that barely recovered its costs on first release, and it became the most-seen film in history only after television began airing it annually from 1956. The shift from sepia Kansas to full Technicolor Oz is one of the most quoted moments in cinema, and it was a deliberate technical showpiece: Technicolor was new, expensive and blazingly hot under the lights.
Buddy Ebsen was the original Tin Man and had to leave the production after a severe reaction to the aluminium powder makeup. The film did not turn a real profit on release. Annual television broadcasts from 1956 onward made it, by some measures, the most-watched motion picture ever made. This one is printed on a carolina blue youth t-shirt in sizes Youth S through Toddler 4T. A solid pick for anyone who still checks behind the curtain.
