Description
This Shoes to Die For design comes from The Wizard of Oz, the 1939 film that almost nobody saw as a hit and that television then turned into the most watched movie ever made. The production was famously difficult. It went through several directors, the Tin Man was recast after the original actor reacted badly to aluminium dust makeup, and the Wicked Witch makeup was toxic enough to restrict what Margaret Hamilton could eat. The Wizard of Oz was released by MGM in 1939, adapted from the 1900 L. Frank Baum novel. It was an expensive production that barely recovered its costs on first release, and it became the most-seen film in history only after television began airing it annually from 1956.
The ruby slippers are silver in the L. Frank Baum novel. MGM made them red to show off Technicolor, and a surviving pair is one of the most valuable film props in existence. Buddy Ebsen was the original Tin Man and had to leave the production after a severe reaction to the aluminium powder makeup. This one is printed on a light blue womens t-shirt in sizes S through 2XL. A solid pick for anyone who still checks behind the curtain.
