This Never Say Die design comes from The Goonies, the 1985 film in which a group of kids from Astoria, Oregon go looking for pirate treasure to stop the bank taking their houses. It underperformed against expectations on release and then became a permanent fixture through television and home video, which is the same path The Wizard of Oz took fifty years earlier. Donner kept the young cast together for much of the shoot and let them talk over each other, which is why the dialogue sounds like actual children rather than written children.
