This Mr. Universe design comes from Steven Universe, the Cartoon Network series about a boy raised by three alien warriors in a beach town, which turned out to be a show about family, grief and negotiation. The premise is deceptively small. Steven is half human and half Gem, living in Beach City with Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl, and most episodes are about a feeling rather than a fight. The larger story about the Diamonds and what happened to his mother arrives slowly and lands hard.

Garnet is a fusion of two Gems, Ruby and Sapphire. The show treats fusion as a relationship rather than a power-up, which is why a character can simply be a fusion and stay that way.
