The first pilot, The Cage, was rejected for being too cerebral and starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike. NBC ordered a second pilot, which almost never happens, and got Kirk instead.

The Gorn suit was so stiff the stuntman could barely move, which is why the Arena fight is so slow.
