For much of the twentieth century Irish law closed the pubs on March 17, because it was a religious holiday; the restriction was lifted in the 1960s. Saint Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Roman Britain and first came to Ireland around the age of sixteen, taken as a slave; he escaped, and returned years later as a missionary.
