Samurai Jack Sunrise Black Crewneck Sweatshirt

This Sunrise design comes from Samurai Jack, the Cartoon Network series that threw a samurai into a ruined future and then spent most of its runtime saying nothing at all. The design language survives reduction better than almost any other cartoon of its era. Aku is a black shape with a green mouth and red flame. Jack is a white shape with a topknot. Both read instantly at any size, which is precisely why they work printed flat on a shirt. It is also extraordinarily quiet. Whole sequences run without a word, action is staged in long unbroken beats, and the show trusts the audience to sit in silence. The storyboards read closer to a Kurosawa film than to a Saturday morning cartoon, which is exactly where the influences came from.

It won Emmy Awards during its original run and again for its return, which is unusual for a series that came back after more than a decade away. Tartakovsky went on to make Primal and to direct the Hotel Transylvania films, but the visual grammar he worked out here, flat colour and long silences, runs through all of it.
