This The Wall design comes from Roger Waters, the bassist and lyricist who wrote The Wall and spent Pink Floyd's biggest years turning his own preoccupations into stadium spectacle. The visual language belongs to Gerald Scarfe — the marching hammers, the schoolmaster, the brick lettering. It is some of the most recognisable album art ever made and it works at any size.

Waters based much of The Wall on his own life — his father was killed at Anzio in 1944 when Waters was an infant, and that absence runs through the whole record.
