This The Wall design comes from Roger Waters, the bassist and lyricist who wrote The Wall and spent Pink Floyd's biggest years turning his own preoccupations into stadium spectacle. Roger Waters joined Pink Floyd at the start and took over as its principal writer after Syd Barrett left. From Dark Side of the Moon onward the band's themes — pressure, alienation, war, madness — are largely his.

The crossed hammers are Gerald Scarfe's design for The Wall, deliberately built to look like a totalitarian party emblem — which is exactly the point the album is making.
