This Year of the Dragon Gold Beast design comes from Dungeons & Dragons, the tabletop roleplaying game that invented the genre. The 1980s moral panic that tried to link the game to occultism became, in time, a durable piece of its own marketing. Dungeons & Dragons was published in 1974 by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, and grew out of the Chainmail miniatures wargame.
