This Tiamat Queen of Evil design comes from Dungeons & Dragons, the tabletop roleplaying game that invented the genre. It replaced the wargame convention of commanding an army with controlling a single character who persists and improves between sessions. The 1980s moral panic that tried to link the game to occultism became, in time, a durable piece of its own marketing.
