Tootsie Roll

Leo Hirshfield began selling Tootsie Rolls in New York in 1896 and named the candy after his daughter Clara, whose nickname was Tootsie. It is widely cited as the first penny candy sold individually wrapped, and it went into American military rations because it held its shape in heat where chocolate would not. The recipe uses a graining process in which part of the previous day's batch goes into the next, so a thread of the original runs through every piece made since.

Captain Tootsie was the candy's comic-strip pitchman in the 1940s and 50s, drawn by C.C. Beck — the artist behind Captain Marvel.
