Dubble Bubble

One penny, one pink brick, one comic strip folded inside the wrapper. Dubble Bubble was invented in 1928 by Walter Diemer, a 23-year-old accountant at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia who was tinkering with gum recipes on his own time. The misspelled name was deliberate, and the colour was an accident: pink was the only food dye on the shelf the day he got the batch right. Diemer taught the salesmen to blow bubbles themselves, because nobody else could work out how. Pud and his pals arrived on the wrapper comics in the 1940s, and the whole candy counter came with them.

This collection runs the full family the brand grew into after Tootsie Roll Industries took it over in 2004 — Razzles, first a candy then a gum, since 1966; Nik-L-Nip wax bottles; Cry Baby extra sour; Tongue Splashers; Wack-O-Wax; Mega Mouth; Mystery Centers; and Pud himself at the plate, on the pickleball court, and blowing one that is never going to pop.

Questions

Who invented Dubble Bubble?
It was created in 1928 by Walter Diemer, an accountant at Philadelphia’s Fleer Chewing Gum Company, while he was experimenting with gum recipes.
Was it really the first bubble gum?
Yes, Dubble Bubble was the first commercially sold bubble gum. Diemer’s formula was less sticky than regular chewing gum, which let it form bubbles easily.
Why is bubble gum pink?
Reportedly it was an accident. The only food coloring available at the factory was pink, so Diemer had no choice but to use it, and pink became the worldwide standard for bubble gum.
How did the first batch sell?
Diemer individually wrapped 100 pieces using a salt water taffy machine and sold them for a penny each at a local candy store. They reportedly sold out in a single day.
How much did it make in its first year?
First-year sales surpassed $1.5 million.
How did they teach people to blow bubbles?
To promote the product, Diemer himself reportedly taught salespeople how to blow bubbles so they could demonstrate the technique to customers.
Who is Pud, the character on the wrapper?
Pud was the brand’s mascot, introduced in 1950. He was originally much more rotund than the slimmed-down version seen in the 1960s.
What were the comics on the packaging?
Packages featured the Fleer Funnies, color comic strips starring Dub and Bub starting in 1930, later replaced by Pud and friends in 1950.
How many different comics were made?
Over 1,002 unique comics were released over the years.
What happened to Dubble Bubble during World War II?
It was distributed to the military, but sugar and latex became scarce, so bubble gum manufacturing was halted in 1942. Fleer resumed making it in 1951.
What flavor is Dubble Bubble?
It is a fruit-flavored, usually pink-colored bubble gum. Fleer later extended its reach by adding new flavors.
Who owns Dubble Bubble now?
Concord Confections purchased the brand in 1998, and Tootsie Roll Industries acquired Concord in 2003.
