Dubble Bubble

One penny, one pink brick, one comic strip folded inside the wrapper. Dubble Bubble was invented in 1928 by Walter Diemer, a 23-year-old accountant at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia who was tinkering with gum recipes on his own time. The misspelled name was deliberate, and the colour was an accident: pink was the only food dye on the shelf the day he got the batch right. Diemer taught the salesmen to blow bubbles themselves, because nobody else could work out how. Pud and his pals arrived on the wrapper comics in the 1940s, and the whole candy counter came with them.

This collection runs the full family the brand grew into after Tootsie Roll Industries took it over in 2004 — Razzles, first a candy then a gum, since 1966; Nik-L-Nip wax bottles; Cry Baby extra sour; Tongue Splashers; Wack-O-Wax; Mega Mouth; Mystery Centers; and Pud himself at the plate, on the pickleball court, and blowing one that is never going to pop.
