Wondercon 2017 Recap and Highlights

Posted by Jade Nicolette on 10th Apr 2017

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth at Wondercon! We had a blast at the convention. Originally known as the Wonderful World of Comics Convention, WonderCon first kicked off in 1987 and has since relocated to Los Angeles and the Anaheim Convention Center. We decided to take a moment and recap our experience at Wondercon and share some of the major highlights from the event.

From Tony Stark to Negan from The Walking Dead, fans were on their a-game wearing cosplay from all types of different fandoms. Be sure to check out our Facebook Page, where we uploaded over a hundred images from the festivities. We were thoroughly impressed by all of the creative cosplay and incredibly detailed costumes we came across all weekend long.

Every year, the three-day event usually packs over 60,000 attendees into the convention center. On Friday, fans were treated to a variety of panels, including "Rangers ’n’ More: A History of Tokusatsu" - covering other shows and movies which influenced the original Power Rangers series, "The Growing Popularity of Latin Superheroes: Marvel, DC and Beyond" and a special Riverdale panel featuring major stars from the series. Saturday's lineup included a panel featuring a slew of animation shorts during "The 18th Animation Show of Shows" along with a discussion of "Comic Book Team Ups" at noon.

One of the biggest panels at the event was the Warner Bros. Pictures panel which kicked off Saturday afternoon. Fans of DC Comics had their hearts set on this panel, which focused on the upcoming Wonder Woman film. Although the film’s main star, Gal Gadot, was unfortunately not in attendance, fans were given a look at some brand new footage of the film. One of the highlights of the weekend also included a Wonder Woman cosplay meetup. To the delight of many fans, Director Patty Jenkins crashed the party and posed for a couple of group photos.

Next up, the team from Nerdist took center stage with "Nerdist TV: Tech the Future, Tech the World", followed by an early screening of "Class", which is a spinoff of the "Doctor Who" series. Sunday morning included a panel called "Rainbow Magic: LGBTQ Disney Fandom", featuring a discussion by Prism Comics and Disney fans.

While most fans might be suffering from the post-convention blues after Wondercon, fear not, because Comic Con is right around the corner. Held at the San Diego Convention Center, Comic-Con International 2017 officially kicks off during July 20 through 23. In true SDCC fashion, just like every year, the convention has sold out of badges in record-breaking speed. According to the San Diego Union Tribune, all of the badges were officially sold out in a mere hour and fifteen minutes after the online sale began. Every year, Comic-Con attracts over 130,000 attendees, including major celebrities, directors, artists, and additional members of the industry. Be sure to stay tuned to more nerd news on our blog, and be sure to check out our booth this year at San Diego Comic Con!
