Star Wars Celebration 2017: The Last Season of Star Wars Rebels

Posted by Jade Nicolette on 15th Apr 2017

This weekend, thousands of Star Wars fans have descended on Orlando Convention Center for all of the epic Star Wars Celebration 2017 festivities. On Thursday, we took a closer look at the 40th Year Anniversary Panel, which introduced some surprise guests to the convention. Yesterday, the hype was real for The Last Jedi panel and trailer debut. The excitement continues today, where we were given a closer look at Star Wars Rebels, and some intriguing new developments regarding season four. Earlier this week, a trailer for EA’s upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront 2 video game was leaked online, gamers have been anticipating any news regarding the title ever since.Let’s take a closer look at all the highlights from today’s events.

Here’s all the details we learned about Star Wars Rebels season four, which is set to air on Disney XD this fall. Today’s panel included showrunner Dave Filoni and reuniting the stars of the Ghost crew, including Tiya Sircar (Sabine Wren), Steve Blum (Zeb), Taylor Gray (Ezra Bridger), Vanessa Marshall (Hera Syndulla), and Freddie Prinze Jr (Kanan). Created by Dave Filoni, Star Wars Rebels just recently wrapped up it’s third season on Disney XD. Star Wars Rebels originally kicked off about five years prior to the original movie, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Based on the turn of events at the end of season three, the Rebels are heading to Yavin 4, and the timeframe is getting increasingly closer to the Battle on Scarif during Rogue One.

More Mandalorians

When pressed for more regarding season four, Tiya Sircar initially hesitated, but she did her best to drop a few hints without verging into spoiler territory. For season four, fans can expect to see more Mandalorians. Could we possibly see Boba Fett making an appearance? We’ll have to wait and see. Filoni also elaborated on an amusing hashtag called #HotKallus, referring to the former Imperial officer who recently defected from the Empire. "That one strand of hair was really expensive to animate," Filoni joked about the new addition to the Rebel Alliance.

Freddie Prinze Jr amusingly noted that not much will change for Kanan, replying with a laugh that he'll still be blind. Freddie gave an eloquent description of his character and Kanan's ongoing relationship with his Padawan, Ezra, and the experience of training Sabine with the Darksaber in season three. Taylor Gray also shared his perspective on Ezra's growth over the past few seasons. After toying with the dark side, Gray shared that Ezra is still exploring what kind of person he wants to be, and how he can help his people on Lothal. Looking ahead, Filoni also confirmed that Hera Syndulla will become a general before the end of season four.

Familiar faces and new ones to be introduced

Dave Filoni confirmed that Mon Mothma will return for season four, along with Forest Whitaker (Saw Gerrera). More characters like Two Tubes, and the introduction of Thrawn's bodyguard, Rukh, will also debut on Star Wars Rebels. Warwick Davis, affectionately known for his role as Wicket from Return of the Jedi, lends his voice acting skills for the role of Rukh. Warwick's casting originally started off as a joke from last year's Star Wars Celebration in London, and Filoni humorously noted that he needed someone "sneaky and devious" for the role.

While the biggest headline from the panel might be the most heartbreaking for fans, Filoni officially announced that season four will be the final season for Star Wars Rebels. Filoni, who previously worked on The Clone Wars, said that he knows how it feels to have a show end before its time. He’s referring to the time when The Clone Wars was abruptly taken off the air, even though there were still several seasons planned. Before fans lose all hope, Filoni did mention that it’s certainly not the end of Star Wars animation. Sadly, Chopper wasn’t able to make an appearance, but we’re definitely looking forward to seeing more of the Phoenix Squadron in action this fall.
