Meet Marvel's Last Defender In The New Iron Fist Trailer

Posted by Jade Nicolette on 7th Feb 2017

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming slated for release in May and July, this year is already shaping up to be a huge one for Marvel. To tide us over until the summer, we can look forward to the hotly anticipated Netflix series, Iron Fist, to turn towards while we wait.

When Marvel’s widely anticipated Luke Cage series debuted on Netflix last year, the streaming website literally crashed. Daredevil and Jessica Jones have also been major Netflix hits with Marvel fans, and the comic book company looks like they’re shaping up to repeat their success with the upcoming series “Iron Fist”.

Earlier today, a brand new trailer for Iron Fist debuted, featuring even more new footage than we were able to see at Comic-Con last summer. The trailer emphasizes that Iron Fist will be the final Defender, an epic superhero squad including Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage in the lineup. Although The Defenders doesn't have a solid release date set in stone, there are sizable rumors that the series is slated for release later this year.

In the trailer, Finn Jones is introduced as a shabby, downtrodden hobo—Danny Rand, who’s a far cry from his (much prettier) role as Ser Loras Tyrell in Game of Thrones. Rand has unexpectedly returned to New York City, fifteen years after he was assumed dead from a catastrophic plane crash. The series will follow Rand’s struggle to reclaim his right to the family company, Rand Industries, while also fighting against evil forces at work in the New York City underground. At the onset of the trailer, Rand is desperately trying to convince a dubious receptionist to let him into his family’s building. Although Danny is the legitimate heir to the family company, Rand Industries, it’s pretty much a given that it won’t be smooth sailing for him in this series.

The trailer also introduces rising British actress Jessica Henwick as the tough, no-nonsense fighter Colleen Wing. We're also given a look at some familiar characters, like Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, who is learning self-defense from Wing. Actress Carrie-Anne Moss reprises her role as lawyer Jeri Hogarth, who we saw in action during Jessica Jones.

Iron Fist will have to face a slew of opponents, including Harold Meachum, played by none other than David Wenham. Lord of the Rings fans will undoubtedly recognize him for playing Faramir in The Two Towers and Return of the King. With some serious action sequences and teases of other crossovers between Daredevil baddie Madam Gao, it looks like yet another Netflix winner for Marvel. We first were introduced to Madame Gao in season one of Marvel's Daredevil. Gao's drug was referred to as the "Steel Serpent", which is briefly shown in the new Iron Fist trailer.

You can watch seasons one and two of Daredevil, season one of Jessica Jones and season one of Luke Cage available now on Netflix. Eager to hear more about what Marvel has in store? The comic book company also has a television series called Inhumans set for a September release, along with Thor: Ragnarok on November 3rd. Iron Fist will officially debut on Netflix on March 17, 2017.
