Disney takes a modern, feminist approach with Beauty and the Beast

Posted by Jade Nicolette on 17th Nov 2016

The trailer for the live-action adaptation of Disney’s classic Beauty and the Beast debuted earlier this week, and the Internet almost spontaneously combusted. According to Disney, the trailer racked up over 127.6 million views in one single day, beating the record previous held by Fifty Shades Darker at 114 million views and Star Wars: The Force Awakens at 112 million views. Emma Watson (@EmmaWatson) looks complete as Belle, and we can’t wait to see what's in store with Dan Stevens (@thatDanStevens) as the Beast and Luke Evans (@TheRealLukevans) as Gaston. The star studded cast also includes Ewan McGregor (@mcgregor_ewan) as the voice of Lumiere, along with Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts and Sir Ian McKellen (@IanMcKellen) as Cogsworth. Obi Wan, Professor Trelawney and Gandalf voicing inanimate kitchen objects? We can't possibly contain our excitement!

From what we've gleaned about film, director Bill Condon decided to take a more modern approach with the retelling of the classic tale. Condon decided to cast none other than Miss Hermione Granger as Belle, and the 26-year-old actress is known for her bold views on feminism. Emma Watson studied at Brown University while balancing out her acting career in the Harry Potter franchise, and in 2014, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. “Being asked to serve as UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador is truly humbling,” Emma announced. “The chance to make a real difference is not an opportunity that everyone is given and is one I have no intention of taking lightly. Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting. I still have so much to learn, but as I progress I hope to bring more of my individual knowledge, experience and awareness to this role.”

Watson grew up watching the 1991 classic, memorizing all of the songs by heart, but the upcoming version will have a few modern edits. Belle will get a new backstory, complete with an empowering rework. Belle’s father, Maurice, works as an inventor in the animated film, while Belle is depicted as a wistful bookworm. In the upcoming film, the tables have turned a little bit. While Belle will retain her bookish charm, she will also have an innovative streak of her own. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emma Watson revealed, “Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn’t fit in, other than she liked books. Also what is she doing with her time?’ So, we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.” We’re excited to see what type of cool, nifty inventions that she comes up with.

Moviepilot delved deep with a side by side comparison between the classic animated film and the upcoming remake, and it has only heightened the anticipation.

Disney has had a ton of success with their recent live-action adaptations, including Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, and earlier this year with The Jungle Book. We can’t wait to be their guest in the upcoming live-action version of Beauty and the Beast, opening in theaters on March 17, 2017.
