Avengers: Infinity War Review

Posted by Jade Nicolette on 2nd May 2018

A mere ten years ago, on this date, Marvel Studios' released Iron Man, and a decade later, the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to break box office records. Iron Man crushed at the box office, and today, actor Robert Downey Jr. is practically synonymous with his role as Tony Stark. Not for the faint of heart, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War has officially blasted its way into theaters. Comic book fans of all ages have attended countless showings by the hordes, with many geeks returning for multiple screenings over the past weekend. Over the past few weeks, the hype surrounding the film has been through the roof. Many fans simply could not stop postulating about the film’s plot, with many wondering which of the beloved superheroes would make it out alive. While we won’t delve too deep into spoiler territory here, we will take a closer look at the film’s current box office streak, and what this means for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.

Thanos has arrived, and although this isn’t the final chapter for our heroes, Avengers: Infinity War certainly delivered with a seriously somber tone. Right off the bat, the film proved that this time around, the writer’s weren’t here to mess around. Featuring several pivotal deaths within the first minutes of the film’s introduction, it’s clear that Avengers: Infinity War was choosing to showcase a different storytelling approach. After a grueling moment between Thor and his brother, Loki, the energy was palpable, and it almost felt like Han Solo himself was going to appear on screen, screaming, “I have a bad feeling about this…”. That being said, the film does have its fair share of light hearted banter between Iron Man and Peter Parker, and some amusing exchanges with Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Most movie nerds and comic geeks are inextricably connected to pop culture, and when we go to the theater, we want to be entertained. We want to be uplifted. We want excitement and heart racing action sequences. We want the high’s and low’s, we want to laugh, and most of all, we want to feel that emotional connection with these superheroes that we’ve idolized since childhood. For most of the film, Avengers: Infinity War delivers with action-packed sequences at a near-mindblowing rate. But in a cruel jest, the film ends rather abruptly, leaving fans with audible gasps in theaters, and wondering what will happen in the next chapter. Interestingly enough, we won’t have much longer to wait, as the Avengers 4 film is set to release next year. But before we speculate on what’s to come, let’s take a closer look at how the film has been cashing in at the box office within the past week.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avengers: Infinity War has officially grossed $300 million in North America alone, just like Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens in 2015. Globally, the superhero blockbuster has smashed box office records with a whopping $1 billion gross in ticket sales from less than a week in theaters. Amazingly enough, Infinity War has also cashed in with a total of $502 million worldwide, and that's not even including China, where the film will be released on May 11th. So far, Infinity War has managed to earn more than Deadpool, Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad--and that's tallying up their entire theatrical runs. Disney and Marvel’s latest superhero flick isn’t going anywhere soon, and it looks like there are even more records to break on the horizon. Warning, from here on out, we’ll be discussing spoilers and some of the main plotlines of the film.

The hotly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War has left many in an uproar, with a slew of fans still shaking in disbelief at the film’s cliffhanger finale. At the end of the film, the fate of the universe seems to be left in the hands of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Rocket, and War Machine. While Avengers: Infinity War definitely focused heavily on the dynamic between Gamora and Thanos, it would have been exciting to see more of T’Challa in Wakanda. However, there's still no word about what Ant-Man and the Wasp have been up to. There's no doubt we'll also be getting a closer look at the adventures of Hawkeye and Brie Larson's upcoming Captain Marvel debut.

After the post-credits scene, some casual fans still had questions, and we're here to give you a little update on some of the future directions for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before dissolving into dust, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) sent a cryptic message using a near archaic piece of technology. While some might have instantly recognized the connection, it seems as though Nick Fury sent a signal to none other than Captain Marvel. Played by Brie Larson, Captain Marvel is set to debut next spring, on March 6, 2019. The film has been highly anticipated, also due to the fact that Captain Marvel is one of the first heroines to get her own standalone movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Marvel writers McFeely and Christopher Markus called Captain Marvel "uber powerful" and also recently confirmed her connection to the upcoming Avengers 4 film.

Many fans seemed to be in a tizzy over some of the Avengers promotional material, with trending hashtags like #WheresHawkeye and voices of concern for Ant-Man. Interestingly enough, the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp film is set to have a clear connection with the next Avengers film. Check out Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Evangeline Lilly as Hope Pym in Ant-Man and the Wasp on July 6, 2018.

With the tumultuous success of Black Panther, 2018 is quickly shaping up to be a banner year for Marvel Studios. In terms of box office sales, it remains to be seen how Avengers: Infinity War will compete with T’Challa’s standalone film in the long run. While we await more clues and hints from Disney and Marvel, it looks like the countdown’s already underway for the next installment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year. Although currently untitled, many have been referring to the follow-up film as Avengers 4.
