Who are the members of The Band?
The classic lineup was Robbie Robertson (guitar), Levon Helm (drums), Rick Danko (bass), Richard Manuel (piano), and Garth Hudson (organ and keyboards). Four of the five were Canadian, with Helm being the lone American.
Where and when did The Band form?
They came together in Toronto, Ontario in the mid-1960s, evolving out of a rockabilly backing group called The Hawks. They officially adopted the name The Band around 1968.
How did they get such a plain name?
Reportedly, locals in Woodstock simply referred to them as "the band," and the name stuck when they went out on their own.
Did The Band really back Bob Dylan?
Yes. They backed Bob Dylan on his historic 1966 electric world tour, becoming known as Dylan’s first electric band, and collaborated with him on the 1967 Basement Tapes recordings.
What was their debut album?
Music from Big Pink, released in 1968, which featured the classic "The Weight."
What is on their landmark 1969 self-titled album?
The album The Band (1969) included "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Up on Cripple Creek."
What was The Last Waltz?
It was their farewell concert, held November 25, 1976 at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and filmed by Martin Scorsese. The concert film and three-LP soundtrack came out in 1978, with guests including Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and Van Morrison.
Did Eric Clapton want to join The Band?
Reportedly yes. Clapton said hearing Music from Big Pink in 1968 "changed my life," and he wanted to join the group.
Are they in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Yes, The Band was inducted in 1994. Robbie Robertson attended, but Levon Helm reportedly boycotted the ceremony over long-running songwriting credit disputes.
Did they win a Grammy?
They received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. They were also inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2014.
Were they ever on the cover of Time magazine?
Yes. The Band appeared on the cover of Time on January 12, 1970, reportedly the first rock group to do so after The Beatles.

Roger Waters reportedly called it the "second-most influential record in the history of rock and roll."

What happened to the members over the years?
Richard Manuel died in 1986 at age 42, and Rick Danko died in his sleep in 1999 at age 55, which effectively ended the group. Levon Helm died in 2012, Robbie Robertson in 2023, and Garth Hudson in 2025.
