This Last Man on Earth design comes from The Twilight Zone, the anthology that spent five seasons proving a half hour is plenty of time to take everything away from someone. Serling came to the anthology format partly to get around network censors. Sponsors would object to a drama about prejudice or mob violence set in a real American town, but the same story set on another planet, or in a town that turns out not to exist, sailed through. Its writers were a remarkable group. Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont wrote many of the best remembered episodes, and George Clayton Johnson contributed several more, including the one with the fortune telling machine in the diner.

Nightmare at 20,000 Feet stars William Shatner as a man who sees a creature on the wing of his plane, and it is the reason a gremlin on an aircraft is still shorthand for nobody believing you. Serling used science fiction to get past network censors: stories about prejudice and mob panic were unsellable set in a real town, and perfectly acceptable set somewhere that did not exist.
