Description
This Opening Monologue design comes from The Twilight Zone, the anthology that spent five seasons proving a half hour is plenty of time to take everything away from someone. The structure is famously strict: an ordinary person, a small wrong turn, and a final reversal that recontextualises everything. The show almost never cheats, which is why the endings still land decades after most of them have been spoiled. Its writers were a remarkable group. Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont wrote many of the best remembered episodes, and George Clayton Johnson contributed several more, including the one with the fortune telling machine in the diner.
In Eye of the Beholder the doctors and nurses are kept off camera for most of the episode so the reveal lands, and the makeup design still works on a shirt sixty years later. Rod Serling wrote or co-wrote more than ninety of the 156 episodes, an output for a single television writer that is essentially unmatched. This one is printed on a black unisex long sleeve t-shirt in sizes S through 3XL. A solid pick for anyone who narrates their own bad days in the voice of Rod Serling.
