This Daddy's Wingman design comes from Top Gun, the 1986 film that turned naval aviation into a synth-scored recruitment poster and never apologised for it. The school is real. The United States Navy Fighter Weapons School was established at NAS Miramar in 1969 to teach dogfighting after air combat performance dropped off in Vietnam, and the call sign culture and squadron patches in the film come straight from it. Top Gun: Maverick arrived in 2022, thirty-six years later, with Cruise insisting on real aircraft and practical photography. It grossed well over a billion dollars and is one of the very few legacy sequels that outperformed the original.

For the sequel Tom Cruise insisted on real aircraft and in-cockpit photography, and the cast went through a months-long flight training programme to withstand the G-forces. Top Gun: Maverick was delayed repeatedly and finally released in 2022, thirty-six years after the original, and grossed over a billion dollars.
