The Goonies Jolly Roger Womens T-Shirt

This Jolly Roger design comes from The Goonies, the 1985 film in which a group of kids from Astoria, Oregon go looking for pirate treasure to stop the bank taking their houses. Sloth, played by John Matuszak under heavy prosthetics, was meant to be frightening and became the emotional centre of the film instead. Matuszak had been a professional footballer, and the makeup took hours every day. It underperformed against expectations on release and then became a permanent fixture through television and home video, which is the same path The Wizard of Oz took fifty years earlier.

The film was shot in Astoria, Oregon, and the Walsh house is still a tourist destination there decades later. Steven Spielberg wrote the story and Chris Columbus the screenplay, four years before Columbus went on to direct Home Alone.
