This Blue Burst design comes from Survivor, the show that dropped strangers on a beach in 2000 and more or less invented the modern reality competition. Survivor premiered on CBS in May 2000, adapted from the Swedish format Expedition Robinson, and its first season finale drew more than fifty million viewers in the United States. Very little on television has managed that since. The format is simple enough to explain in one sentence and deep enough to have run for decades: strangers are stranded somewhere remote, split into tribes, and vote each other out one at a time until a jury of the people they eliminated decides who wins.

The format was adapted from Expedition Robinson, a Swedish series that had already been running for several years before CBS picked it up. Heroes vs Villains, the twentieth season, brought back returning players sorted by reputation and is widely regarded as the best season the show has produced.
