Goskino, 1925. Eisenstein's first feature, made when he was twenty seven and still thinking like the theatre director he had been, cutting for what he called a montage of attractions: images chosen to hit you rather than to explain. The notorious sequence intercuts a crowd being ridden down with real slaughterhouse footage, which is exactly as unpleasant as it sounds and was entirely the point.

The poster is by the Stenberg brothers, who worked without a camera or a projector, sketching from memory after a screening, and who between them produced some of the most reproduced graphic design of the twentieth century. The film itself did poor business at home. Audiences wanted stories and stars, and Eisenstein had given them neither.
