This Goa'uld System Lords design comes from Stargate SG-1, the series that took a single 1994 film and turned it into ten seasons of stepping through a ring into somewhere else. The premise is beautifully simple. An ancient ring buried in Egypt connects to a network of other rings across the galaxy, and a small military team walks through it to see what is on the other side. What is on the other side is usually a problem. Stargate SG-1 premiered in 1997 on Showtime, picking up directly from the 1994 Roland Emmerich film and running ten seasons, the last five on Sci-Fi. At the time it finished it was the longest-running North American science fiction series ever made, a record it held for years.

The series ran ten seasons and was, when it ended, the longest-running North American science fiction show ever produced. The replicators are self-assembling blocks that eat technology, and they were introduced partly because they were cheaper to animate than another humanoid enemy.
