This Command Team design comes from Stargate SG-1, the series that took a single 1994 film and turned it into ten seasons of stepping through a ring into somewhere else. Richard Dean Anderson plays Colonel Jack O Neill, who treats galactic diplomacy as an inconvenience. Amanda Tapping plays Samantha Carter, the astrophysicist who actually understands the technology. Michael Shanks plays Daniel Jackson and Christopher Judge plays Teal c, a defector from the enemy. The premise is beautifully simple. An ancient ring buried in Egypt connects to a network of other rings across the galaxy, and a small military team walks through it to see what is on the other side. What is on the other side is usually a problem.

Richard Dean Anderson had already been MacGyver, and he took the part on the condition that the character be allowed to be funny, which is why the tone is so much lighter than the film. Teal c was played by Christopher Judge across all ten seasons, and the character speaks in a formal register that makes his rare jokes land considerably harder.
