This Dagger of the Mind design comes from Star Trek: The Original Series, the 1966 show NBC cancelled after three seasons and syndication turned into a religion. Gene Roddenberry sold it to the network as a western in space, which is how a show about diplomacy, ethics and a pacifist science officer got made in the middle of the 1960s at all. Nichelle Nichols planned to quit after the first season until Martin Luther King Jr. told her that a Black woman on the bridge of a starship was worth staying for. She stayed, and spent years afterward recruiting astronauts for NASA, among them Sally Ride and Guion Bluford.

The first pilot, The Cage, starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike and was rejected as too cerebral. The Gorn suit was so stiff the stuntman could barely move, which is why the Arena fight is so slow.
