Gene Roddenberry sold it to the network as a western in space, which is how a show about diplomacy, ethics and a pacifist science officer got made in the middle of the 1960s at all.

Martin Luther King Jr. personally persuaded Nichelle Nichols not to leave the show. NBC cancelled it after three seasons and 79 episodes. Syndication made it a phenomenon afterward.
