This Juan Ortiz This Side of Paradise Black design comes from Star Trek: The Original Series, the 1966 show NBC cancelled after three seasons and syndication turned into a religion. The first pilot, The Cage, was rejected for being too cerebral and starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike. NBC ordered a second pilot, which almost never happens, and got Kirk instead. The budget was tight enough that the transporter exists because the production could not afford to land a starship every week. A shimmering effect made from aluminium powder was cheaper than a landing sequence.

The transporter was invented to avoid the cost of landing the ship every episode. The Gorn suit was so stiff the stuntman could barely move, which is why the Arena fight is so slow.
