The first pilot, The Cage, was rejected for being too cerebral and starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike. NBC ordered a second pilot, which almost never happens, and got Kirk instead.

NASA named its first space shuttle Enterprise after a write-in campaign by fans. The transporter was invented to avoid the cost of landing the ship every episode.
