This Ernie Face design comes from Sesame Street, the show that has been teaching letters and numbers on public television since 1969 and has outlasted almost everything that ever shared a schedule with it. Jim Henson built the Muppets who live there, and the mix is the whole trick. Cookie Monster began life in a series of unaired snack commercials Jim Henson made in the 1960s, where the same googly-eyed creature ate the product rather than endorsing it.
