Jim Henson built the Muppets who live there, and the mix is the whole trick. Human neighbours on a real-looking brownstone street, a giant yellow bird, a monster in a bin, and a blue creature with no impulse control whatsoever, all treated as equally ordinary.

Cookie Monster began life in a series of unaired snack commercials Jim Henson made in the 1960s, where the same googly-eyed creature ate the product rather than endorsing it.
