This Mystery Machine Type design comes from Scooby-Doo, the Hanna-Barbera cartoon that has been running in one form or another since 1969 on the strength of a van, a dog, and a villain in a rubber mask. Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! premiered on CBS in September 1969, built by Hanna-Barbera after network pressure to make Saturday mornings less violent. The answer they landed on was four teenagers, a talking Great Dane, and a mystery that always turned out to be a person in a costume.

The unmasking scene is the only genuinely fixed element. The monster is always a person, and that rule is old enough to have been broken, restored and parodied several times over.
