It was made for roughly a million dollars in twenty eight days and took more than two hundred million worldwide. It won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing, beating Taxi Driver and Network in the same year.

The meat locker scenes used real frozen beef carcasses, and the smell was reportedly overwhelming.
