Talia Shire plays Adrian, Burt Young plays Paulie, Burgess Meredith is Mickey and Carl Weathers is Apollo Creed, a showman built openly on Muhammad Ali. Weathers had played professional football and had barely acted, and he auditioned opposite Stallone without knowing Stallone had written the part.

The meat locker scenes used real frozen beef carcasses, and the smell was reportedly overwhelming. It was shot in roughly twenty eight days on a budget near one million dollars, and won Best Picture.
