Avildsen, and written by Sylvester Stallone in about three and a half days after he watched Chuck Wepner last fifteen rounds with Muhammad Ali. Studios wanted the script badly and wanted Stallone nowhere near it. He refused every offer that did not cast him, at a point when he had almost no money at all.

It was shot in roughly twenty eight days on a budget near one million dollars, and won Best Picture. The meat locker scenes used real frozen beef carcasses, and the smell was reportedly overwhelming.
