This Don’t Pick at ME! design comes from The Ren and Stimpy Show, the 1991 Nicktoon that spent three seasons finding out exactly how much a childrens network would tolerate. Creator John Kricfalusi built the show around extreme close-ups and lovingly painted gross-out frames, a deliberate throwback to the Bob Clampett school of animation that had been sanded smooth by decades of television. Nobody on Saturday morning looked like this.
