Description
This Total Request Live design comes from MTV, and specifically from Total Request Live, the afternoon countdown that ran the music industry out of a studio above Times Square. TRL was briefly revived in 2017, which mostly demonstrated how completely the thing it was built on — appointment viewing for music videos — had gone. MTV itself launched in 1981 with the Buggles asking whether video had killed the radio star, and TRL is arguably the last moment the channel held that kind of central cultural position.
The street-level crowds outside the studio window were part of the format, and the block became a daily gathering point. MTV launched on 1 August 1981, and the first video it aired was Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles. This one is printed on a red unisex sweatshirt in sizes S through 3XL. Grab it for yourself or for the friend who still knows the countdown by heart.
