This Time of the Orc design comes from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the 2003 finale that won every single Academy Award it was nominated for. The Pelennor Fields sequence put more figures on screen than any battle filmed to that point, using crowd software the production wrote itself. The story that the digital soldiers occasionally ran away from the fight rather than engage is one the effects team told for years afterwards.

It remains the only fantasy film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The Pelennor Fields battle used crowd simulation software written in-house, and the team joked that some digital soldiers fled the battlefield.
